WHAT'S MOUNTAIN RIDERS ?
WHAT'S MOUNTAIN RIDERS ?

Mountain Riders is an educational association founded in 2001. We work towards an ecological transition in the mountain environment. By encouraging children and young people to become drivers of change, by inviting people to adopt a responsible approach when practising sport, by helping tourism stakeholders, and by involving citizens and elected officials, we are able to preserve our mountains, which are both essential and fragile! In our actions, we strive every day to embody the change we want to see in the world.

All year-round, with children and teenagers, we carry out nature outings, bivouacs, activities, and fun workshops, all adapted to school and extra-curricular programmes.
With our partners, we coordinate a yearly awareness campaign and call everyone to clean and protect our mountains from waste. In 2019, 25 tonnes of waste were collected during 63 clean-up sessions, involving over 5000 volunteers!
For a true transition to take place in mountain territories, we strive to raise awareness among local holidaymakers and sportspeople through events, workshops, clean-up sessions. We also support councils and professionals in developing a sustainable approach (Educ’Tour, panel discussions, etc.).
We also help towns to apply for the “Flocon Vert” certificate. This certification promotes tourist destinations with a state-of-the-art sustainable development policy and allows everyone to have a clear vision of exemplary destinations.

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THE PARTNERSHIP WITH QWETCH?
Plastic water bottles are among the most common wastes that we find in resorts in spring, once the snow has melted. This partnership with Qwetch is symbolic because it helps us promote reusable containers as well as habits that are part of a circular economy approach. The best waste remains the one that is not produced in the first place! So let’s replace plastic bottles with reusable water bottles for our ski outings or mountain hikes!

WINTER HOLIDAYS ARE COMING, WOULD YOU HAVE A SUSTAINABLE TIP TO SHARE WITH US?
WINTER HOLIDAYS ARE COMING, WOULD YOU HAVE A SUSTAINABLE TIP TO SHARE WITH US?
Nearly 2/3 of the emissions generated by mountain destinations come from tourist transport: planes and traffic jams all heading to ski resorts.
Whether you are local or from another country, my first tip would be to double think about the way you travel to your destination this winter: train, carpooling, ski elevators, etc. Many more sustainable and environmentally-friendly alternatives now exist to travel to your ski resort.
Last but not least, it is also important to make sure you never leave anything behind: hidden under the snow, cigarette butts and packaging seem to disappear, but just remember: they show up in spring! This type of waste has a significant impact on water pollution and on the area’s plants and wildlife.

A bottle designed by a photograph by JC Pieri.
Qwetch worked with the talented photographer JC Pieri to create this chilling Glacier, a unique matt 500 ml insulated bottle!
JC Pieri is a self-taught photographer and filmmaker who appreciates the great outdoors and nature. Originally from Marseille (France), this 29-year-old artist captures his travels in the most beautiful way (he’s visited over 50 countries already!): through photos and videos.
In September 2018, he visited the Vatnajökull glacier in Iceland and brought back this precious memory. “Glaciers are a part of nature that really fascinate me!” says the photographer. “Their ephemeral side and different shades of blue due to the presence of more or less important oxygen are magical: they remind us how much these landscapes are in danger and how much they need to be protected.”
More than just a bottle!
For each Glacier insulated bottle purchased, €2 are directly donated to the Mountain Riders association in order to raise awareness around sustainable development, set up clean-up sessions in the French massifs and to preserve biodiversity in the mountains. So, you too, commit to a sustainable mountain and replace your plastic bottle with this reusable insulated water bottle, your best option when it comes to ski outings or mountain hiking!
